You know I scoured the web for days, not hours, to find a compilation of high waisted denim pencil skirts. Usually I would remove the manufacturer’s and write my own opinion regarding their product – and I”m still going to do the latter – but I loved the way they described this skirt and I think it was pretty spot on.  So the quoted text below is what the manufacturer had to say and here is what I have:

This skirt is denim. Yes D-E-N-I-M and it looks like you could wear it to the boardroom. Hidden zippers, tailored hems, remarkable colors, if you’re looking for a style that reeks of class and sophistication, you can’t go wrong with Ann Taylor.

Denim Skirt Price: $58.00 Not a heavy denim by any means, but a cool shape and color with a really awesome styling that shows off a slim figure. It’s not a skirt that goes well if you have a slight belly (like me), but if you’ve got some spanx I say go for it. It’s just too awesome looking to pass up. Not that they’ve done it any favors with the shirt the model is pairing with it. *shudders* I’d go for a much more tailored top to show off that awesome high waist and maybe a wide belt.

Denim Pencil Skirt with Belt Price: $58.0 Dark denim wash skirt doesn’t exactly have a really high waist, but it’s not a low waist either. I happen to like the pleating in front, mainly because I have a belly that it hides. What can I say, peanut butter milkshakes are too irresistible. I also love that it’s a bit high above the knee. (I have great knees OKAY!) and I love the tailored look. It’s not a traditional denim, so be aware of that, but it’s very cute and stylish.

The question isn’t what to wear with any denim pencil skirt, it’s what to wear with your style of pencil skirt. Believe it or not, there are hundreds of different styles. There are highwaist, short waist, ones with a ruffle at the bottom, below the knee, above the knee, dark, light, thin, thick etc. If you want to know what works with your skirt, it’s important to narrow down the style. What you would wear with a short skirt, wouldn’t always work with a long skirt and vice versa. So let’s explore some options.

Too much on top will distract from a skirt that has a special design, like a high waist or a distressed color. Stick with solid colors and don’t be afraid to go bold, it will only accent the skirt. If you pick something with too many adornments, stripes, bold designs etc. the skirt will be over powered and no one will notice the fabulous high waist or the impressive design in the fabric of your skirt if all their attention is on the top portion of your body.

Another thing of importance: tucking in the shirt. If you have a highwaisted skirt, show it off! Tuck in your shirt and wear a wide belt or a small belt or any belt at all. Heck, even a scarf is a great way to draw attention to the design of the skirt itself. Wrap the scarf around and tie it off to the side. Let the tail ends of it hang down and draw even more attention to the lower half of your body. The great part about that is if you have issues with hips or thighs, the attention will mostly be focused on your waist.

Denim pencil skirts with a ruffle at the bottom have a different problem. While the advice is still the same: solid colors, tuck in the shirt, there can also be addendums. Ridiculously ruffled shirts are too much, but a layered shirt will bring the whole look together. A simple ruffle on the top or a pinstripe will look awesome.

So highwaisted and ruffled at the bottom are really the only very specific styles which can be overshadowed by an un-tucked shirt or too much going on up top. The rest is really up to you when it comes to other styles. Tuck in or leave it out, slap on a bedazzled t-shirt (>8( please don’t) or a hot pink silk blouse, a long shirt or a midriff. The lovely thing about a pencil skirt is its ability to look sexy without trying very hard. You don’t need a lot of adornment to make an outfit great. There are, however, some combinations that look better with a fitted, sleek style like a pencil skirt. Tailored blouses, v-neck t-shirts and long sleeves are an especially incredible look – maintaining that almost tube-like appearance.

Old Navy Womens Denim Pencil Skirts

Not for every office, this distressed denim pencil skirt will make a few statements – almost all will start with “Wow!” There aren’t many women who don’t love the look of distressed denim with a white blouse. It’s my favorite as well. That’s what I would pair with this incredible skirt by Old Navy. But I also love the idea of a polo shirt in any number of colors and a matching cardigan.

I’m a sucker for shoes. Of all the things it’s important to get right for an outfit, the shoe is numero uno in my book. Not too matchy matchy because you’ll rarely get two denims to match precisely which makes this strappy, sexy sandal with the peep toe an ideal candidate for denim pencil skirts. The heel isn’t too high for those of us that fall off sidewalks in tennis shoes, but it’s high enough to give that lovely push to the muscle in the back of your leg for awesome definition.

Lastly, in the realm of denim shoes (I promise this is the last pair), I can’t help but love these ZiGiny Women’s To Die For Thong Sandal. And they are to die for. Basically a flat the thong instep is only part of the appeal, the cuff that doubles as a anklet dresses up any skirt and just brings a little bling to the whole ensemble. Not the cheapest of shoes at $69.95, but not the most expensive either. And my favorite part? The zipper in back. How freaking cute is that?!

Enough with the denim styles, there are a bazillion other styles of shoes that work great with denim pencil skirts, not the least of which is a pair of awesome funky sneakers. There are a ton of other styles which look really fantastic. Flats, for instance, were a staple in the 50′s as I mentioned above. But if you’re looking for something sexier, something sassier – a platform, stiletto or a wedge are audacious and bold.

This is one of the best flats for everyday wear. The price ranges from $15.98-$44.95 depending on the color and size but Easy Street Women’s Audrey Ballet Flat is by far the best casual shoe on the market.

But I’ve saved the best for last. Boots! Ohhhh boots, you beautiful sexy, elegant, sophisticated fashion statement. A pencil skirt with boots is my absolute favorite style. There isn’t a style of boot that I don’t love, to be honest. If I had to narrow down a choice to one boot, and that’s if I absolutely had to, it’d be STEVEN by Steve Madden Women’s Intyce Riding Boot. And while it comes in a lot of different colors, I think the tan/brown shade is the best option for denim.
